FAMILY LAW

Women in the United States have gained much in the last one hundred years.  We no longer automatically lose custody of our children and property upon divorce.  Yet we still provide the majority of care to our children and other family members, as well as shoulder more than our share of housework.  And when going it alone, women’s economic status often suffers.  The Law Center has worked hard to ensure that family law treats women fairly and recognizes our important role in the family.

Current Action

  • Working to ensure that the courts continue designing parenting plans that meet the needs of each family.
  • Ensuring equitable division of pension benefits in marital-like relationships.  See our brief in Owens v. Automotive Machinist Pension Trust.
