About Us

About Us

Legal Voice, founded in 1978 as the Northwest Women's Law Center, has been the vanguard organization bringing groundbreaking litigation and fighting for landmark legislation to ensure justice for women in the Pacific Northwest for more than 30 years.

As an action-oriented, diverse organization, Legal Voice is committed to securing and protecting the rights of all women. We are a vital force in the community, making substantive, lasting changes through legislation and litigation designed to have a far-reaching public impact, and by empowering women with knowledge about their legal rights.

Our Programs

The Women of the Northwest deserve strong and just laws. Making it happen is not only our mission—it is our passion.

Legal Voice believes that justice for women is everyone's issue. Our mission to advance women's legal rights improves the quality of life for mothers, daughters, sisters, and grandmothers—and for everyone who loves and supports them.

Every day we focus on activities that contribute directly to lasting, systemic changes in society, from lawsuits and statutes, to agency rules, self-help materials, and public education.

Litigation

The Legal Voice Litigation Program brings cases that change the law throughout several states in the Northwest. In addition, we participate as amicus curiae (friend of the court) in cases affecting women throughout the nation, and provide assistance in litigation, legislation, and advocacy to organizations and attorneys throughout the region.

Legislation

Through our Legislative Program, Legal Voice drafts, analyzes and advocates for bills affecting women and their families in Washington State, and provides assistance and model legislation to advocates around the region.

Education

Legal Voice believes that educating people about their legal rights empowers them to make decisions and advocate for themselves and their families.

Our Self-Help Program provides free legal and practical information for women and men who cannot afford attorneys, or do not know where to turn to solve legal problems that threaten their health, safety, security, and the well-being of their families.

Services are provided through a Legal Information and Referral (I&R) telephone line staffed by volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students, and through Self-Help and Legal Education materials.

The Legal Voice Women's Bill of Rights

Legal Voice believes that women—all women—have these fundamental rights:

  • Women have the right to equal treatment and to be free from discrimination.
  • Women have the right to decide when and how to form and maintain their families.
  • Women and girls have the right to be safe wherever they are.
  • Women have the right to economic equality and independence.
  • Women have the right to be healthy and active.

Women's rights. Nothing less.
